How We Do

They crucify me for my monthly liver,
and even while facing that fate,
I refrain from telling them,
that plants too-
 -feel pain.
.
That plants can scream,
They have communities, memories,
and know far more than you'd ever think is true.

It is one of those scientific truths
that I keep close,
for it is usually too painful for those who claim to pursue truth.

What happens if it is impossible for you to be an altruist?
If the last little crumb
of your secret superiority
turns out to be a misconception,
an erroneous fallacy.

So while I take your hate,
and keep my cool,
I can't shake the feeling,
that this too,
is a necessary truth.
For it exposes a key aspect
to the nature
of this world
The nature and relationship of all of our being,
with all other beings,
then together,
with the greater Being.

So if it is that both plants and animals feel pain,
perhaps it isn't "what"
but "how"
we consume.
How We Choose.
How We Do.
That justifies the pain.
